I saw this video where someone built a house in Ultima VII, despite the fact that Ultima VII has no building system.
To me this imagery summarizes the punk vibe of ultima, that a core feature of those games is that you can do unintended things, and the game lets you. I hope to explore more of this in my ultima VI fan recreation project Age Of Singularity.
For example, in my game you can get ANYONE to join your party, given the right conditions. can this probably break the game? probably. Will it be awesome? definitely. I'm also working on an addition to the animate spell that can give an intelligent personality to any animated item, thus making them characters, thus allowing them to join your party. for example, you animate a door, give it a personality, ask it to join you, carry it on your back. Will it probably break the game? Probably. Will it be awesome? Probably.
Since watching Grugtar's Ultima V let's play LINKHERE and reading some frustrations some gamers have with the limited simulation in modern games, I've realized I also need to add the ability to "talk at/yell at" anything, whether it's an object, or the sky, or the ground. But that is another topic.
Nowadays when I play classic Ultima VI, I use the map editor thing for ultima VI to put some house chunks over some of the moongate circles, thus creating player houses I can use. An ability to buy property to build on (or build anywhere if you don't get caught) is something I want to be a basic feature of my Ultima Vi fan recreation project Age Of Singularity, because it's such a fun and legit feature to have in an ultima game. Progression in Ultima is mainly about collecting keywords to get info about where to find items, and having a base where you can relax and display all the items you've found, is really cool.
