Many Level Maps |

Smaller is often better.
My top two tips for making a map less
boring!
1) make the whole space smaller, damn near
claustrophobic. Dramatically reduces time spent
designing details and also reduces shoe leather
(pointless walking) for the player, which helps
you distill the essence unless you are
specifically designing a big open bleak area
like an endless desert or snowstorm. I collapsed
the entire iceberg realm into a much smaller
space to make it more cosy and cheaper to
improve.
2) get rid of a lot of the light. Darkness
lets the player fill in the blanks, saving you
time and money designing things! I reduced and
focused the lights in the operating theatre to
make it more cosy and dramatic.
