What makes a realm worth visiting? And about
being bummed.
I upgraded the visuals for the Cottage
Realm…which sucked so bad before that it’s
possible I haven’t even shown it yet. Now I'm
using a pack from the asset store.
Every time I boot up my game, I visit the
Library Realm. And I NEVER visit some specific
realms. What is the difference? Being a pretty
place I enjoy visiting, combined with good music
like I have for the Library Realm. I love music,
so as long as a realm is not a hideous eyesore
and has good music, I will compulsively visit it
every time I play, just to walk around and
listen to the song. INSTANT gameplay value, if
you market your game as an “architectural
concert and walking simulator” experience.
Everything else is built upon that baseline.
The reason for fewer updates recently has been
the non-visual system work I’ve been doing:
player settings, clocks and calendars, the audio
conversation system, etc., and the standard “am
I going crazy? will the game ever be done? will
anyone even notice? the unity editor is sluggish
with weird bugs. this is so easy and fun that it
doesn’t feel worth doing. does creating
characters in oculus medium actually make my
life easier or harder? will I really be able to
make a living off of this? maybe I should just
watch a youtube video of a dancing dog and spend
all my energy getting into youtube comment wars
that no one will ever read or care about,
including me.” A work in progress. I never get
out of the house because I have no income, and
one of my best fuels comes from interacting with
people in-person outside the house. A grindy
challenge.
As silly as it is, the social media follower count slowly
going up makes my day better. It’s funny, that I
slowly get followers even when I am away. But if
I am away awhile, then I come back with a new
post, a chunk of people unfollow–like people
followed because of my previous posts, saw the
new one and were like “OH, I didn’t mean to
follow THAT.” It’s all in good fun. I’m pretty
stingy with who I follow, too.
End of bummer part. I generally don’t blog about
being sad or whatever, but as a development log,
it’s worth documenting that even if you don’t
feel great all the time, you can still
accomplish cool shit if you keep chipping away,
day by day.
Anyway, my dream would be to
write a novel, import the text file into Unity,
and hit the play button. I’m building systems to
get ever closer to that.
And about music.
As for this Cottage Realm, the music is going to
be a mix of Oakvale from Fable, Clock Town from
Majora’s Mask, and the Forest Maze from Super
Mario RPG.
A youtube playlist of those
songs I made for you to listen to, to get into
the mood.

The assets are the Hand-painted Countryside
Pack by Red Panda on the Asset Store, in case
you want to go make a better game than me. Do
it.
